Your guide to Gatwick Airport, United Kingdom from Cheap Hotels Ltd.
Located in Crawley, West Sussex, which is 28 miles south of London, Gatwick Airport is London's second largest airport and the busiest single runway airport in the world. Flights depart and arrive at this airport from more than 200 destinations and it serves about 35 million passengers. In addition to being the base for British Airways and several other UK airlines, it is home to many charter airlines as well. A flying school operated here in the 1930's and pilots were hired to bring people in to watch the races at the racecourse. It became an airport in 1933 and scheduled flights began arriving in 1936. It became a base for the RAF during the Second World War and after the war, aircraft maintenance continued here. As it gradually started to rebuild as an airport, the flights were mainly cargo planes and the airport was redeveloped in 1952. There are two terminals at Gatwick Airport, called the North and South terminals. Both terminals offer many services for travelers, with many shops and restaurants. Facilities for disabled travelers and for families with small children can be found in both terminals. Executive lounges offer Internet connections and work areas for business people and there is a conference and meeting center here for their needs. Hotels are located quite close to the airport, with taxi and bus services operating to bring travelers to further destinations. Car rental agencies provide vehicles for those wishing to drive themselves. The airport also has a multi-faith prayer room and the airport is served by chaplains of the Anglican, Catholic and free Church faiths.
